Dumitru Hurubă: Jerome K. Jerome, umor şi viaţă (fragment, continuarea pe acest blog)

…În timpul respectivei conflagraţii mondiale, la 56 de ani, Jerome a considerat că ar fi normal să se ofere voluntar în serviciul armatei britanice care, însă, l-a refuzat pe motiv că era prea în vârstă. În urma acestei respingeri, un an mai târziu, în 1916, în plin război mondial, Jerome se angajează în armata franceză ca șofer pe ambulanță de unde se va întoarce în Anglia după terminarea războiului. Între alte amănunte despre viața sa, Jerome, cu umorul său specific și special, scrie și despre perioada petrecută în armata franceză în autobiografia intitulată My Life și Times (Viața mea și vremurile), care a fost publicată în 1926. De amintit că, în timpul primului război mondial, Jerome a combătut cu vehemență în paginile revistei Common sense (Bunul simț), atât ororile războiului cât și imperialismul. 

Revenind la opera lui Jerome K. Jerome, consider că, măcar în prima fază, dar şi pentru a ne fixa mai bine asupra valorii ei, este bine să ne oprim asupra câtorva titluri pe care le-am ordonat cronologic, dar şi respectând titlurile originale:  Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow (1886, Gândurile trândave ale unui pierde-vară); Three Men in a Boat (1889, Trei într-o barcă, însă cu titlul complet: To Say Nothing of the Dog, [fără a mai socoti şi câinele, trad. completă, Leon Leviţchi]), cel mai celebru roman al său; The Diary of a Pilgrimage (1891, Jurnalul unui pelerinaj); Novel Notes (1893, povestiri Stranii); Second Thoughts of An Idle Fellow (1898, Gândurile trândave ale unui pierde-vară, vol. II); Three Men on the Bummel (1900, Trei pe două biciclete); Three Men on Wheels) (1900, Trei hoinari); Paul Kelver (1902, roman); Tommy and Co (1904, Tommy şi prietenii săi); They and I (1909, Ei şi eu); All Roads Lead to Calvary (1919, Toate drumurile duc la patimi); Anthony John (1923); The Love of Ulrich Nebendahl (1909, Iubirea lui Ulrich Nebendahl); The Philosopher's Joke (1909, Glume filozofice)…

Ca o menţiune specială, sau ca un amănunt important, trebuie (re)amintit că, sub titlul comun şi în traducerea semnată de Carmen Faţac, în anul 1980, apare la Bucureşti, la Editura Albatros, volumul intitulat Gândurile trândave ale unui pierde vară cuprinzând: Jurnalul unui pelerinaj (Diary of a Pilgrimage (1891) şi Gândurile trândave ale unui pierde-vară (The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow (1886); Gândurile trândave ale unui pierde-vară, vol. II (Second Thoughts of An Idle Fellow (1898). Mai târziu, în anul 2005, Editura Leda publică volumul Arta de Nu scrie un roman (288 de pagini), traducerea aparţinând Liei Decei. 

Şi, dacă tot veni vorba: în anul 1957, apar în româneşte volumele Trei într-o barcă (fără a mai socoti şi câinele), traducere: Leon Leviţchi, Editura Albatros, şi Fantoma lui Whibley, E.S.P.L.A., traducere: Sergiu Dan. De asemenea, în anul 1989, Editura Dacia publică într-un singur volum: scrierile Tommy şi prietenii săi (Tommy and Co (1904) şi Idei trîndave, traducerea fiind asigurată de Horia Hulban şi Călina Gogălniceanu, Idei trîndave fiind un fel de extras după/din Gândurile trândave ale unui pierde-vară, vol. I şi II.  

În anul 2009, la Editura Biblioteca Adevărul, sunt publicate romanele: Trei într-o barcă (fără a mai socoti şi câinele) (Three Men in a Boat (To say nothing of the Dog, 1889, în traducerea lui Leon Leviţchi), şi Trei pe două biciclete (Three Men on zhe Bummel, 1900, în traducerea lui Dan Duţescu).
